Did you know dogs and cats can suffer from dental problems just like humans? People commonly consider bad breath in their pets as normal but it can be a sign of painful dental disease. Plaque can build up on pet’s teeth, this can harden and become tartar. Not only can tartar itself be irritating and painful for your pet, it can also cause gingivitis (gum disease) and hide tooth decay. Chronic gum infections harbour a lot of bacteria which can affect your pet’s heart, liver and kidneys over time.
DENTAL CARE
The best way to prevent tartar build up is with regular brushing with pet friendly toothbrushes and toothpaste. However brushing isn’t always an option, so there are dental chews and treats available that can reduce plaque and prevent tartar build up. If your pet already has significant tartar on their teeth we often recommend a dental scale and polish.Chronic gum infections harbor a lot of bacteria, which can affect your pet’s heart, liver and kidneys over time.
Dental Scale and Polish
Your pet will need to go under a general anaesthetic to have their teeth cleaned. Once they are asleep we will clean their teeth using an ultrasonic scaler to remove any tartar. Once the tartar is removed we can fully assess the health of the teeth. In some cases we need to remove teeth that are loose and causing pain. After this the teeth are polished and your pet woken up from their anaesthetic.
